Methodology
Our campaign to find the UK’s top 10 EV-friendly road trips considered the following metrics:
- Number of EV charging locations nearby: The number of EV charging locations within two miles (3.2 km) of the route was sourced via PlugShare. Charging stations included all available networks on PlugShare: Allego, Blink, bp pulse, ChargePoint, Supercharger, Tesla Destination, and Other (including non-networked locations). Plug types considered all that were available on PlugShare: CCS2, CCS1, CHAdeMO, J-1772, Tesla (Roadster), Type 2, Type 3, Caravan Mains Socket, Commando, and Wall (BS1363). The kilowatt (kW) range for charging stations included all options from 0 kW to 350+ kW.
- Number of EV charging locations per km: This metric was calculated by dividing the total number of charging locations along the route by the total distance of the road trip.
- Number of full charges needed – The total distance of each road trip was sourced from Viaboo. The estimated number of full charges required was then calculated using the average range of the top 10 most sold EVs in 2024, as reported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The average range of these vehicles was 308.8 miles (497 km) per charge.
- Number of accommodation options with parking along the route: This metric was sourced from Booking.com. Availability was checked for a one-night stay from Saturday, 8th March to Sunday, 9th March at locations along the route.
- Number of nearby attractions: This metric was sourced from Tripadvisor.
Each of these metrics has then been weighted equally to generate an overall score out of 100, to form the top 10 list. The routes of each road trip are as follows:
- South Downs: Starts in Eastbourne. Travels through Lewes, Brighton, Arundel and Petworth. Finishes in Chichester.
- Peak District: Starts in Chesterfield. Travels through Bakewell, Buxton, Castleton and Bamford. Finishes in Manchester.
- Cotswolds: Starts in Oxford. Travels through Burford, Bourton on the Water, Cheltenham, Painswick and Cirencester. Finishes in Chippenham.
- Norfolk Coast: Starts in Norwich. Travels through Hemsby, Cromer, Blakeney and Hunstanton. Finishes in King's Lynn.
- Lake District: Starts in Kendal. Travels through Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick. Finishes in Penrith.
- Causeway Coastal Route: Starts in Ballycastle. Travels through Bushmills, Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock. Finishes in Derry.
