Two supermini cars designed for best performance in urban areas, that have been on the market for decades, and have become popular amongst a wide range of drivers, the SEAT Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo are desirable cars for good reason.

Even though they’re both great options if you require a small enough vehicle to fit it within tight parking spots, they have other features that may catch your attention and help you decide which one is a better fit for your lifestyle.

This article will explore the vehicles’ similarities and differences in detail to assist you in your decision-making process.

Introduction and Design

Introduced to the market in the mid-1980s, the SEAT Ibiza rapidly became one of the manufacturer’s best-selling vehicles. Featuring as a supermini, the SEAT Ibiza debuted a youthful and sporty exterior design that complements the minimalistic and tech-forward cabin, which provides a stylish and ergonomic driving experience.

The Volkswagen Polo, was launched a few years before Ibiza, making its debut in 1975. It's designed to be a compact car that is perfect for navigating and parking in the city while showcasing a sleek and modern exterior styling. Looking inside, the cabin is equipped with intuitive technology and seamless smartphone connectivity.

Both models' main focus is to offer comfort and good driving dynamics. Ideal for urban driving, the duo have similar dimensions, which make it easier to find parking.

Versions and Performance

The generation of Volkswagen Polo featured here is available with five different engines; four petrol-powered and one diesel. You can choose between 1.0-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines that produce a minimum of 80bhp and a maximum of 207bhp. This is reflected in the 0 to 62mph acceleration times, which can vary from 6.5 to 14.9 seconds.

There’s only one choice of a 1.6-litre diesel engine that produces 95bhp. It can accelerate to 62mph from rest in 11.2 seconds, and this is the most fuel-efficient engine compared to all the other options. Whilst the most efficient petrol engine can do up to 54.3mpg, this one can return up to 74.3mpg.

Looking at the SEAT Ibiza, it comes with a range of four petrol engines that vary between 1.0-litre and 1.8-litre, and two 1.6-litre diesel engines. The most powerful petrol engine produces 175bhp, which results in a 0 to 62mph time of 10.9 seconds.

When fitted with the 1.6-litre diesel engines, the SEAT Ibiza produces up to 128bhp and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62mph in just 9.1 seconds.

When it comes to fuel economy, both vehicles have similar efficiency. Whilst the Polo can do nearly 55mpg, the Ibiza can reach up to 57mpg.

Interior and Technology

Looking inside, you’ll find that both vehicles are equipped with infotainment systems and an interior that offers comfort.

The standard trim for each model comes with an 8-inch infotainment system. The screen size gets bigger as you upgrade your vehicle to a higher trim. Whilst the Ibiza offers a 9.2-inch screen on its highest trim, the Polo is equipped with 10.25 inches.

You’ll have a similar experience when trying to connect your smartphone to both vehicles’ infotainment. The Polo and Ibiza both come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto pre-installed which allows seamless connectivity to smartphones, and access to contact numbers and addresses.

The Polo’s cabin is designed with high-quality materials, which helps differentiate it from competitors in the same segment. Having received five stars in the Euro NCAP safety ratings, the Polo is a safe car that is fitted with multiple safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, electronic stability control (ESC), and hill hold control.

The latest generation of Ibiza is known for having received an upgrade in its interior which increased the amount of legroom the driver and passengers can enjoy whilst inside the vehicle. The Ibiza also performed well on Euro NCAP safety rating, being granted a score of five stars, which makes it a safe vehicle.

Some of the safety features equipped in Ibiza are tiredness recognition systems, front and rear parking sensors, and electronic stabilisation control (ESC).

Practicality

Both vehicles were designed to offer practicality and a comfortable experience. Even though they’re superminis, which makes them ideal for driving within large cities, and easy to find parking, they still offer relatively large amounts of storage.

With 355 litres of storage, the SEAT Ibiza's boot space doesn’t compromise the rear seats. In addition, the Ibiza is a good car to own for daily use, as the storage is large enough to carry groceries and everyday necessities.

By contrast, Polo's boot space is slightly smaller than Ibiza’s. The 351-litre boot should also be enough space to carry shops and small suitcases.

Value and Final Thoughts

After analysing both of these excellent city cars, we can conclude that both cars have a lot of similarities because they share the same platform, but they each have their benefits that are worth taking into account before making a decision.

In addition, it's worth mentioning that residuals on the Polo are typically stronger than the Ibiza (because they share the same platform), meaning you may have to pay slightly more for the privilege of owning the Polo by comparison. However, you do get slightly more technology and better build quality for your money.

Due to the vehicles’ small size and practicality, both the Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza could be an excellent choice for a first car. If storage space is crucial to your lifestyle, the ideal choice would be the Ibiza, however, if performance and low fuel consumption are more of a priority, you will be better served with the Polo.

If you value having bigger screens and slightly more onboard technology, you may also opt for the Polo. As previously discussed, even though both vehicles have the same size of screen for their infotainment system, Polo offers the biggest screen of the two on higher models.
