Used Vauxhall Astra for sale
Ask someone who has owned a used Vauxhall Astra to describe their experience, and you'll likely get comments on how the car is a 'solid all-rounder' and 'quietly impressive', which are all traits that you'd expect from a company with Vauxhall's heritage.
The Astra is a medium-sized hatchback that is ideal for established families and has been a go-to for fleet managers for many years. Having entered its seventh generation in 2015 and then benefitting from an update in 2019, the Astra makes for a good choice on the used car market.
Reasons to consider a Vauxhall Astra include:
- Affordable to buy and run
- Refined and easy driving experience
- Generous equipment levels across the range
- Efficient engines, especially on the facelift model
- Practical interior design
Engines and Driving Experience
A new platform was brought in for the seventh generation Astra, which made it lighter on its feet and therefore more agile and efficient. However, the Astra has never been about unparalleled driving thrills. Instead, it excels at offering an accomplished driving experience, where owners will enjoy decent refinement and respectable levels of grip.
Initially, petrol engines ranged from a 99bhp 1.4-litre up to a brisk 197bhp 1.6-litre unit. There were a handful of small turbocharged units thrown in for good measure, although it's the punchy three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine that impressed with its ability to return 64.2mpg on a combined cycle.
A mid-life refresh in 2019 saw the engine choices overhauled. The options consisted of a frugal 1.2-litre with 109bhp or 128bhp outputs, which could achieve up to 54.2mpg. A 1.4-litre with 143bhp occupied the middle of the range, while a 1.5-litre diesel that could consistently return over 55mpg finished off proceedings.
Practicality and Running Costs
It will be rare to hear complaints from passengers when travelling in the Astra. There's acres of head and leg room up front, while even taller passengers won't find it too difficult to get comfortable in the back.
Boot space is reasonable in the Astra, with 370 litres on offer. It's not as big as the likes of the Skoda Octavia, but it's more than adequate for family life. It's also worth noting that an estate is available, which grants an additional 170 litres of boot space.
The Astra should be pretty kind where running costs are concerned. It generally occupies insurance groups between 10 and 20 (50 being the highest), while wear and tear items are readily accessible and inexpensive.
Your nearest Evans Halshaw Vauxhall retailer can accommodate any servicing and repair requirements too, with discounted rates for anyone who is a member of Vauxhall Service Club.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
As is traditional with a modern Vauxhall, there are plenty of specifications to choose from, ranging from well-equipped to nigh-on lavish. The entry-level cars benefit from a touchscreen infotainment system that has been tastefully integrated into the dashboard, while Bluetooth and cruise control also feature as standard.
Head up the range and you'll start to unlock goodies such as electrically folding mirrors, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control. Opt for a 'Nav' variant and you'll get a slick satellite-navigation system, too.
The Astra achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, which was because of the excellent protection they offer both passengers and pedestrians. Standard safety features include:
- Six airbags
- Stability control
- Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
- Emergency braking assistance
- Isofix mountings for a child's seat
Is the Vauxhall Astra right for me?
Vauxhall really brought the fight to their rivals with this generation of Astra. The engines are efficient and flexible; the interior is tasteful and well-thought out; and there can be no denying the sheer amount of equipment is impressive.
All-in-all, if you want a solid all-round family car that will get you from A to B in comfort, then the Astra is a fine choice. However, if you're after a more desirable badge, then the Volkswagen Golf is always worthy of contention, while the Ford Focus is another top performer.
You'll struggle to find better value, but the likes of the Renault Megane, Hyundai i30, and Kia Ceed might just be able to achieve it, so take a look at them as well.
